Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare three 8-inch round cake pans by greasing them.
- Cream together softened butter and granulated sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
- Incorporate the large egg, egg whites, and vanilla extract. Mix until fully combined and smooth.
- Add half of the all-purpose flour along with the baking powder. Mix gently until just combined.
- Blend in the sour cream and maraschino cherry juice until smooth.
- Fold in the remaining flour, then mix in the whole milk until cohesive.
- Gently fold in the chopped maraschino cherries.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 24-26 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
Frosting and Decoration
- Whip together the softened butter and vegetable shortening until smooth and creamy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and cherry juice to the frosting while mixing until creamy.
- Level the cooled cake layers, frost between the layers, then frost the top and sides.
- Decorate your cake with additional maraschino cherries on top.
