How to Make Heart Shaped Cherry Cake
  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C) and generously grease an 8 or 9 x 2½-inch heart-shaped cake pan.
  2. Mix the dry cake mix, eggs, baking powder, vanilla extract, almond extract, and half of the cherry pie filling in a large bowl until just moistened.
  3. Transfer the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing out the top for an even bake.
  4. Bake for 65-75 minutes for a heart-shaped pan, or 40-45 minutes for a 9x13 pan, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Cool the cake completely in the pan on a wire rack before transferring it to a serving platter.
  6. Blend together softened butter, vanilla extract, and almond extract in a medium bowl. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk for frosting consistency.
  7. Frost your cooled cake with the creamy frosting, generously spreading it over the top and sides.
  8. Decorate the cake with mini chocolate chips or colorful sprinkles.
  9. Pipe whimsical designs with any remaining frosting.
