Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (unbleached) for structure and chewiness
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast to help the bread rise
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar adds sweetness
  • 1.25 cups warm water 110°F/43°C to activate yeast
  • 3 large eggs for enrichment and color
  • 0.33 cups vegetable oil (or melted butter) for moisture and richness
  • 1 teaspoon salt enhances flavors

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • Baking sheet
  • plastic wrap
  • kitchen towel

Method

How to Make Challah Bread
  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, along with the eggs and oil. Stir until well combined.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into a strand and braid them together.
  6. Place the braided loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let it rise for another half hour while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush with egg wash and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
